Gotland Island: Attractions and more...
The island is a paradise for bicycle riders. The varied landscape, with steep cliffs and coastlines, beaches and meadows, provides for a memorable ride along the lime-gravelled roads. For activities like fishing, horseback riding, climbing and diving, it is best to visit this island during spring or autumn.
There are several Romanesque and Gothic style churches on this island. The town of Visby, with its ‘roses and ruins’ is a World Heritage Site and has a fortress wall, encircling the city, dating back to the period during the Hanseatic League.
The island of Stora Karlsö nearby is a nature reserve with several species of birds and rare plants. The Faro Island is popular for its many exotic beaches and sea-stacks.
Among the large number of festivals and events, the popular ones are the annual Round Gotland Sailing Race in July and the Chamber Music Week and Medieval Week in the beginning of August.
