Båstad became a popular seaside resort in the nineteenth century. Along with the nearby town of Torekov, it attracted a lot of tourists. Gradually, a large number of guest houses, restaurants and cafes sprung up in the area. One of the most popular tourist attractions is the therapeutic seaweed bath in Torekov.
The fifteenth-century St Mary's Church in central Båstad is a Romanesque church. It has several features like centuries-old wall-paintings, an image of Madonna and a Danish altar-piece. There is also a popular waffle house, Solbakkens, claimed to serve the finest waffles in the country.
Båstad enjoys the credit of having the most number of tennis courts in the country. No surprise therefore that the most popular event in this town is the ATP Tour every summer. The Swedish Open attracts over 20,000 visitors to the city.
