Gotland Island in Sweden is popularly known as ‘the Pearl of the Baltic Sea’; it is the largest island in the Baltic Sea. The island topography consists of sedimentary rocks with the Fårö and Gotska Sandön islands in the north and the Karlsö Islands in the west.
It receives many hours of sunshine and is typified by mild autumns, with a cooling effect owing to the presence of the adjacent sea. The favourable climate coupled with the limestone soil favour a wide variety of vegetation and wildlife.
The first inhabitants on this island were the Stone Age people, about 7,000 years ago. The medieval town of Visby was an important centre for the Baltic Sea trade during the Middle Ages.
Today, with a population of about 57,600 inhabitants, this town is fast developing as an IT hub. Agriculture and tourism are the main sources of income.
