During summer, the unspoilt countryside makes the perfect setting for fishing, hunting and walking. Canoeing and white-water rafting are especially popular. Kiruna is excellent for skiing almost throughout the year and hosts the premiere cross-country skiing World Cup very often.
A renowned Swedish attraction is the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi in Kiruna. This hotel, claimed to be the world’s biggest igloo, is reconstructed every year. There is also a church in Kiruna; built in 1912, it is one of Sweden’s best looking churches with its neo-Gothic architecture and altar built in the Art Nouveau style.
The Kiruna Snow Festival in January conducts international snow-sculpting championships. ‘Fjälldraget’, Europe’s biggest and toughest dogsled race, takes place during March–April. At the end of April, there is also the Lapland Ice Fishing Championship, which is Scandinavia’s biggest ice-angling contest, with over 2,000 participants.
