The island is famous for the limestone pavement known as Stora Alvaret, which is a World Heritage Site and has a variety of rare flora and fauna. It also has several prehistory sites such as Gettlinge and Eketorp and old, wooden windmills that are standing since the seventeenth century.
Eketorp is one of the nineteen Iron Age ring forts on the island and the only one which has been completely excavated. It has over 24,000 artifacts.
The island also houses the Borgholm Castle, built in the seventeenth century and designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder, for Queen Hedvig Eleonora. Solliden Palace, summer home of the royal family, is also nearby.
One of the major celebrations in Öland is Victoria Day in July. There is also the annual harvest festival of Skördefesten every October, with several events and exhibitions including an art night called Konstnatten.
