Originally built in the 1600s, Katarina kyrka (Catherine's Church) is a tough old broad.  Named for the mother of King Charles X, the church has been twice ravaged by fire and also twice rebuilt, the last time in the 1990s.

Through it all, Scandinavia's first central church has retained its baroque beauty, right down to the gilded new organ built by Holland's J. L. van den Heuvel Orgelbouw firm.

While the church has refused to give up its life despite the fires and a financial crisis in the 1930s, fallen heroes of Sweden's past — including statesman Sten Sture the Elder, foreign minister Anna Lindh and artist Cornelis Vreeswijk — have their final resting places in the adjacent cemetary.
