Stockholm Monuments and Historic Buildings: Storkyrkan

Storkyrkan

You can't have a great European capital without a great cathedral.   Stockholm is no exception. The Storkyrkan (Great Church) sits in the heart of the city's historic center and, according to legend, was first built city founder Birger Jarl in the 13th century.

The rib vaulting, rose window and baroque gilding are breathtaking, but the star attraction is the Berndt Notke's 1489 statue of St. George slaying the dragon.  Commemorating Sten Sture the Elder's victory over the invading Danes, the statue was carved from oak and elk horn.

Stop by after seeing the Royal Palace (right across the street) and marvel at the art, architecture and 40 kroner fee (under 18 free), a welcome respite for your budget in pricey Stockholm.
