Stockholm, the self-proclaimed "Capital of the North," sits on a network of 14 islands in Lake Malaren at the edges of the Baltic Sea.
Each island has its own unique attractions. The city is centered around the Old Town, which sits on the islands of Stadsholmen, Riddarholmen and Helgeandsholmen. Museum-filled Djurgarden lies to the east, trendy Sodermalm to the south and historic Kungsholmen to the west.
Getting around is very easy thanks to the Tunnelbana — popularly known as T-bana — subway system, a 110-kilometer link operating seven lines across 100 stations. The stations themselves are so beautifully decorated, the system is jokingly referred to as the world's longest art museum.
