The Münster is considered to be among the main sights of Basel.
The reformed church stands as a testimony to Gothic and Romanesque architecture.
The cathedral depicts the varied historical aspects along with a unique tradition of church services and musical events.
The first traces of the cathedral date from the Carolingian period. It was destroyed in 917 when the city of Basel was attacked by the Hungarians.
Emperor Henry II endowed the city with a splendid cathedral at the beginning of the 11th century. However in the last quarter of the 12th century, the cathedral was restored and made into a Romanesque building replicating Gothic style and structure.
Today this square is used as a centre for all kinds of events and serves as an outdoor area for people to meet.
With its multicoloured roof tiles, twin towers and red sandstone walls, the Cathedral is a must-see feature of the city.
The tomb of Erasmus of Rotterdam, the choir, the crypt, the two cloisters and the Galluspforte stand as a proof to the eventful history of its construction over several centuries.
