The Clock Tower or Zytglogge in Bern is a must-see for every tourist in the city.
The tower was constructed in 1210 and is considered to be one of the largest working clocks in the world.
The moving puppets are certainly worth waiting for.
The tower was initially used as a prison. The placement of the prison in the clock tower, right in the town centre, was a deliberate attempt to serve as a warning to would-be criminals. The prison would be a reminder to the offenders of where they could possibly land up, should they not respect the law.
Black and gold are the main colours of the tower. The black recalls night time while the golden colour represents day-light hours.
The clock also contains zodiac signs which stand as a testimony to the mystical aspects of life.
Designed by Kasper Brunner, the clock tower is the only attraction one would see in Bern Old Town. The tower is still preserved beautifully and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
