Tourist Guide Lausanne
Lausanne is a picturesque medieval town set right on the shores of Lake Geneva
and surrounded by beautiful vineyards. Once a Roman port called Lousonna, this
city has always been an important part of the trade route from the North Sea
to the Mediterranean and has wielded great influence in medieval times. Until
1798, when it was proclaimed part of an independent republic, Lausanne was ruled
by influential Berne. It is now the capital of the canton of Vaud, and it joined
the Swiss federation in 1803.
The International Olympic Committee has had its headquarters in Lausanne since
1915, when the founder of the modern games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, fell
under the city’s spell. In 1993, an Olympic Museum was founded, and in
1994, Lausanne was named the official Olympic Capital. Lausanne also houses
the headquarters of many multinational companies and service organisations,
which gives it both a national and international influence.
