Lauterbrunnen, located in central Switzerland in the Kanton of Bern and close to Interlaken, is made up of five small villages (Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, Muerren, Gimmelwald, Stechelberg and Isenfluh) situated within the stunning Swiss Alps at a hight of almost 800m (over 2,600ft) above sea level. The freshand clear alpine waters of the Weisse Luetschine river run through the area.
The area offers many outdoor opportunities for hiking and adventure sports in summer, and extensive winter sports during the snowy and crisp winters. The nearby lakes of "Thunersee" and "Brienzersee" also offer tourists swimming and boat tours during the summer. The area is also popular with classic car and motorbike clubs thanks to the smooth roads and spectacular scenery.
Lauterbrunnen also features heavily in popular culture: J.R.R. took inspiration from the area and based the fictional land of Rivendell on sketches and watercolours he made there. The countryside was also the inspirationfor the german poet and author Goethe to write his famous poem " Song of the Spirits above the Waters". The snowy car chase in the 1969 James Bond movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" was filmed in the area.
