Locarno: Attractions and more...
The Sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso, perched atop a hill, is the most magnificent structure in the city. The sanctuary is still a popular pilgrim site and houses an art museum. A cable car can be taken to ascend a further 1,600 m from the town.
The Castello Vincenzi, a medieval castle which used to serve as a royal residence, displays the Roman artefacts unearthed from the surrounding region. The Astrovia Locarno is an interesting large-size replication of the solar system; thus, while the Sun is found in a street in Locarno, the planet Pluto is found in a small village, 6 km away. The Piazza Grande (main square) is the main shopping district; Italian handicrafts and antiques can also be found here.
The Locarno International Film Festival is one of the oldest and largest film festivals of Europe. It is held in the first two weeks of the Piazza Grande; open-air screenings, competitions and seminars form a part of the event.
