Lugano is located in the extreme south of Switzerland very close to the Italian border. Owing to its location, Italian influence is extremely visible in all aspects of life in this town. This lakeside town of approximately 53,000 inhabitants is located along the shore of Lake Lugano.
Lugano enjoys a Mediterranean climate with long periods of sunshine. The average summertime temperature is 25°C. The surrounding mountains save the town from a bitter winter, but at times, the temperature does drop to 0°C.
For many years of its early history Lugano was the cause of many disputes between the Swiss and Italian dukes. But, in the nineteenth century the town was promoted as a tourist spot on account of its natural beauty; over the years, the number of visitors has rapidly increased.
