Only a few structures remain from Neuchâtel’s medieval history. The fortified castle and the Prison Tower are worth a visit for the view of the city from the top. The University Church is known for the painted effigies of French noblemen from the Middle Ages. The Griffin Fountain, which was once filled with red wine; the Maison des Halles, the market square which is still the site of a daily market; and the beautiful gardens of Hotel de Peyrou, are also worth a visit.
Neuchâtel has several museums catering to various interests: Latenium, an open-air museum displaying archaeological findings of the region; the Museum of Art and History, which also contains an interesting collection of the first-robots ever made; and a museum dedicated to the different ethnicities of the world.
The town also has many options for outdoor activities such as swimming in the lake, cycling or hiking on the slopes in summer and skiing during winter.
