Things to Do in Göreme: attractions to See in Göreme

Göreme: Attractions and more...

Göreme is renowned for the ‘fairy chimneys’ rock formations made of soft volcanic ashes (tuffs). With a large number of inhabitants and establishments in these ‘chimneys’, it is almost like an independent town.

The Goreme Open Air Museum is the remains of an ancient monastic community, with churches, eye-catching frescoes (especially, the Fish and Grape churches) and several rooms dug into the walls of the valley.

The Ihlara Valley nearby, has about 100 churches carved into the rocks of the gorge. One should not miss the underground cities of Cappadocia Derinkuyu being one of the accessible ones with their multi-storeyed tunnels and large stony rooms.

Göreme is famous for its wine. The town of Urgup, close to Goreme, holds the International Wine Festival in October every year. There are also community events like the autumn harvest of pumpkin seeds and the preparation of ‘pekmez’ and ‘village bread’ for the upcoming winter months.
