The might of ancient Constantinople can still be felt in its modern successor, Istanbul. The skyline of this city is dotted with mosques and minarets, the dominating one being Ayasofya (which was the greatest Christian Cathedral of the middle ages and is now a mosque and museum), the Basilica Cistern (a large ancient cistern beneath the city) and the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (known as Blue Mosque because its interior tiling).
The historic city of Assos is host to the Temple of Athena (a structure built in 530 BC), while the equally ancient Temple of Artemis can be found at the 5000 year old Sardis city. The Archaeological Museum at Antalya has beautiful exhibits and is considered to be the finest museum in the land.
One can also visit Pamukkale’s Cotton Castle, a magnificent fortress-like ‘frozen waterfall’ formed by limestone-laden hot springs. Both Pamukkale and Hierapolis (an ancient city with second century baths) are World Heritage Sites.
