Moving uphill, through the walls of Nicaea, one gets a good view of the whole town including the location of the old Senate house. Among the historical monuments are the ruins of the Hagia Sophia Church, which was built in 600 AD and was also the site of the seventh Ecumenical council. There is also the Archaeological Museum and the city walls.
The Green Mosque (Yesil Cami) has ancient Seljuk-Turkish style architecture. There is also an Ottoman imaret (soup kitchen) that houses the city museum. The rare Byzantine underground tomb (Yeralti Mezar) can be found on the outskirts of the town.
Iznik ceramic wares have adorned many mosques and palaces in Turkey. This area abounds in structures from the Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman eras. With its scenic locales along Lake Iznik and the historical monuments, this ancient town is a picture-perfect place.
