Konya (ancient city of Iconium) is the capital of the Konya province in Turkey. Located in the Anatolian plateau, this city is one of the oldest inhabited settlements in the world. Saint Paul and Saint Barnabas are believed to have preached here during their lifetime.
With a population nearing 900,000 inhabitants, this city is one of the driest regions in Turkey with an annual rainfall of less than 300 mm.
Konya is best known for its hand-woven carpets/kilims. Leather, aluminium, sugar and flour products are the other manufactured goods. Farming, mining and cattle-rearing are the chief occupations.
Konya city prospered in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries as the capital of the Seljuk Turks and is renowned the world over as the home of the sect of the Whirling Dervishes.
