Pamukkale is located in the south-western part of Turkey. It is a natural attraction and has been included on the list of World heritage Sites by UNESCO.
The region experiences a temperate climate with hot summers and chilly winters. In July and August, the temperature generally stays above 30°C.
The region is nestled in a river basin which used to see frequent earthquakes. The earthquakes caused very hot springs to emerge from the river basin. Once the water in these springs dried up and white chalk-like limestone was left behind.
The white deposits covering the hillsides appear like cotton, and thus, the name Pamukkale which literally means cotton fortress. Originally, one could climb over these hills and bathe in the pools but now access has been limited in order to preserve the region.
