Tourist Guide Selçuk
Selçuk in the İzmir Province in Turkey derives its name from the Seljuk Turks who settled here in the twelfth century. It lies close to the resort town of Kuşadasi and the ancient town of Ephesus.
Selçuk has a typical Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The average summer temperature is 30°C, and during winter, it can drop below 10°C.
Selçuk has been a centre of historical, cultural and religious significance since early times. It was a major trading centre in the ancient days because of its proximity to the coast. Since the 1990s, it has become important on the tourist map as a starting-point to visit the ruins of ancient Ephesus.
With a population of about 23,000, agriculture is the major economic activity in this town. Tourism is developing, with opportunities for religious and cultural tourism.
