Selçuk: Attractions and more...
While in Selçuk, one can go on a conducted tour of Ephesus and visit the Temple of Artemis, the Church of Virgin Mary, the tomb of St. John and the İsa Bey Mosque. There is also the Ephesus Museum, housed in a castle, and the National Park of Kalamaki.
The ideal way to spend a Saturday would be to shop in the town market and then relax with an indulging meal in the evening. Do not forget to sample the famous ‘çöp şiş’ (small chunks of grilled lamb and fat) and gözleme (Turkish pastry with a variety of fillings). Turkish cuisine is known for its usage of fresh ingredients.
The Selçuk-Ephesus Culture, Art and Tourism Festival in May and the Camel Wrestling Festival in January attract a lot of participants and visitors. Also well known are the Rite ceremonies at the House of Virgin Mary held every year on 15 August and the Service held on the second Sunday of October to commemorate the date of the General Council held in 431AD.
