The region has a great influential culture as it was based around the ancient kingdom of East Anglia. The East of England has managed to preserve the unspoilt heritage, architecture and traditions of the land with a mix of traditional towns and sprawling cities. Multicultural communities can be found at Bedfordshire while natural beauty is abundant at the historical town of Cambridge.
The university town of Cambridge also includes attractions like the beautiful Trinity College with a statue of King Henry VIII, the Nene Valley Railway, Ely Cathedral and the Imperial War Museum. Colchester is the oldest recorded town in the country and was historically the first Roman capital of England. Attractions in Suffolk include Christchurch Mansion and Greene King Brewery (working for over 200 years). Also worth a mention is the cathedral city of Norwich in Norfolk County.
One of the largest events of its kind is the Luton Festival, a trademark affair of the region. Other festivals include Essex Book Festival in March, the Summer Music Festival and the Folk Festival (both taking place in Cambridge around July), the exciting Peterborough Festival of Hunting, East of England Autumn Show in October and the much-awaited Christmas Festival in late November. |
