It is also the wealth of attractions that draws guests to the South East. Windsor is home to the world’s oldest inhabited castle, the Windsor Castle. The ancient Canterbury Cathedral, a UNESCO Heritage Site and the centre of the Anglican Church, is also worth a visit. The Battle Abbey was built on the site of the Battle of Hastings (one of the defining events of British history). Also visit the Isle of Wight (a popular sailing and sporting destination) and the Victorian Pier (with its stylish cafes, souvenir shops and artists’ studios).
The Glyndebourne Festival is an internationally-famous opera festival held in East Sussex in mid-May. Other important events include Brighton Festival (a 50-year celebration with world premiers), the Isle of Wight Festival (a celebration of all kinds of music with live performances) and A Festival of Christmas in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
