South East: Introduction and History

South East England spreads over an area of 19,096 sq km and has a population of around 8 million.

South East England is one of the nine regions of England. Its counties include Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, East Sussex, West Sussex, Kent, Surrey and the Isle of Wight. The region forms a large arc around London, stretching from the Isle of Thanet (in East Kent) to New Forest in Hampshire and Milton Keynes in the north.

The people of the region are known not only for their hospitality and friendliness but also for their sense of pride as residents of the South East. From being an inspiration to authors of bestselling novels and classics to being the ideal setting for various movies and programmes, the region attracts people from every age group to experience the rich culture and royal heritage that it has preserved over the centuries.
