South West: Introduction and History

South West England spreads over an area of 23,829 sq km and a population of nearly 5 million.

South West England is the largest region (by area) in England. Most of the region belongs to a peninsula between the Bristol Channel and the English Channel. It comprises the counties of Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire, Devon, Dorset and Cornwall. With over 1,000 km of coast, the South West has the longest coastline of any of the English regions.

The South West is said to be a ‘region of contrasts’, boasting a treasure chest of historical towns and heritage attractions that are symbolical of the locals’ spirit of boldness and pride. With prehistoric sites and old picturesque villages steeped in English myths and legends, it is no wonder that the South West attracts many tourists.
