Canterbury is a city in East Kent, England. With a population of around 45,000 inhabitants, Canterbury’s name is derived from ‘Cantwarebyrig’, meaning ‘fortress of Kent Canterbury’. This World Heritage Site is a major tourism centre, attracting over one million visitors annually.
Characterised by a pleasant and moderate climate throughout the year, Canterbury has sufficiently warm summers and cold, wet winters. Most of the annual rainfall is concentrated in winters. The city is visitor-friendly in every season.
The earliest settlements of Canterbury date back to the pre-historic times. Having been a site of many bombings, the city rebuilt itself after World War II. Today, it has a booming economy with tourism, service and the retail industries being the main components.
