Eastwood is a former coal mining town situated in Broxtowe, Nottinghamshire. Eastwood has a population of over 18,000. The Midland railway was formed here. Eastwood is located at 53° 01’ 03” N 1° 18’ 22” W. Eastwood is surrounded by the gently rolling countryside. It is surrounded by farmed land, woods and fields. According to the census of UK in 2001, Eastwood had a total population of 18,732.
Eastwood has a hybrid place-name formed from “Est”, for “East” and “Pveit”, for “meadow”, “cleared meadow”; this is a common element in English place-names. Eastwood area contains mudstone, sandstone, coal measures with shale and yellow clay. Eastwood is one of few places where the distinctive dialect of East Midlands English is spoken. Eastwood became a part of the Broxtowe District in 1974 for the Urban District Council. From here the Soldiers were sent to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment at the time of the Second World War.
