The Quayside is the oldest part of Newcastle and was the commercial hub of the city. St. Nicholas church and the Norman castle are some of the historical buildings in the city. Near the cathedral is the Sandhill road where ancient houses, belonging to wealthy merchants, from the 16th to the 18th century are still found. Eldon square is the commercial center of Quayside and is named after Lord Eldon.
