The town which is surrounded by a large settlement and administrative centre also has several smaller settlements together to form the Metropolitan Borough of Bury. The city has a total population of 60,718. The town’s name was discovered from Saxon, which means stronghold. Previously the Nomadic herdsman had settled in the city and the area was surrounded by marsh, woodland and inhabited by these nomadic herdsmen. After the 19th century the city developed its water-powered fulling mills, textile manufacture and yarn and cloth. Due to this revolution Bury was known as a mile town. Industries such as Manchester and Bury Canal Company, Bolton developed in the year 1791.
