The town of Hornchurch is located in the London Borough of Havering, East London, England. A suburban center, it is situated north east of Charing Cross at a distance of 15.2 miles. To the east of city are River Ingrebourne and Upminster. On the North West lies Ramford and towards south is Rainham.
Artifacts from the Iron Age, Bronze Age and Stone Age have been found at this place indicating it as a very old settlement. The word Hornchurch has been derived from Latin term Monasterium Cornutum which was used in 1222 and meant “Church with horn-like Gables”. The town was founded in 12th century when 1500 acres of land was donated by Henry II to the hospice of St Nicholas and St Bernard, Mountjoux as a gift in Savoy.
The place was also an important RAF station during the World War I and World War II. In the early 1900’s the railway line arrived at this place which led to the development of the place. It is identified as “district centre” in the London Plan.
