The city lies at the base of the Pennines which is located on the river Roch. In 2001 the city had population of about 95,796. The city got its name Rochdale because of River Roch which has its border on the Pennines. Previously the town was known by the name of Rachedale, but later the name changed to Rochdale. The temperature of the city is comparatively cooler in summer and mild in winter, much like of British Isles.

Rochdale has a number of small towns which include Littleborough, Royton, Heywood and Milnrow, but these cities do not have much green space. After the 19th century Rochdale was reputed as an Industrial town because of its main mill town of cotton spinning and textile manufacturing. The city became the top most industrialized towns in the whole state.
