Decorated in the eighteenth an nineteenth century style Belle Isle was purchased by Isabella Curwen for £1,720 and her husband John Christian Curwen whose descendants lived on the island till 1993. It is a wooded island which is one mile long was known as the Great Island. The island is said to have long history as old as the Roman Times. During the civil war it was the Royalist Strong hold.
