Skipton has an interesting historical background which goes back to the seventh century. It originally used to be just a sheep farm.
Gradually, it became a trading place for sheep and wool.
Commonly known as the ‘Gateway of the Dales’ because of the passage through the Pannines it has now become a busy market town and a sought after tourist destination.
The economy is based mostly on livestock, rural products and mills.
The Aire River crosses through Skipton forming Aires Gap. The population is close to 16,000. People are generally friendly and warm.
The climate here is a little extreme as winters can be hard and cold. Mostly, it is very pleasant and attracts many tourists from all over the world. The longest waterway, the Leeds Liverpool Canal of 127 miles was built here in 1816 bringing in business and prosperity.
The town has an active society which cares for cancer patients and preserves local history. The culture is vibrant and enriching. It is a perfect destination for all age groups.
