The northernmost region of Snowdonia is where some of the highest ranges in Wales are found, and this is the area most popular with visitors. Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales, is the most popular with hikers and is often referred to as the ‘busiest mountain in Britain’. There are several marked footpaths going up to the summit. The Snowdon summit can also be accessed by the Snowdon Mountain Railway.
The Dinorwig Power Station in the village of Llanberis, located deep inside the mountain, is worth a visit. The workings of the power station and the turbines are explained here.
In the middle of Snowdonia is the town of Blaenau Ffestiniog which is not a part of the park region. Originally a slate quarry, it now houses the Llechwed Slate Caverns which can be accessed by visitors to understand the process of slate mining. The mines are accessed by a railway which is Britain’s steepest passenger railway.
