Carisbrooke Castle is a gem of Carisbrooke village in the Isle of Wight. The land on which the castle stands was inhabited long before the Roman era.
This magnificent Norman architecture is built on the basis of a Saxon fort, located on the top of a hill. The fort was taken over by the Jutes in the late 7th century. Around the year 1,000, a wall was constructed around the castle and the hill, which protected it from Viking raids.
The castle's construction was the strongest of all the castles in this area. However, the castle was not the dominating structure on the Isle. The original roman castle was destroyed in the past.
The ruins of this castle lie under the relatively new buildings. Several parts of the castle including the Great Hall and Great Chamber are open to the public. The interesting features of these rooms are the fireplaces.
The upper portion of the castle has been converted into a museum.
