Reading Abbey is a 12th century church in Reading. Now this beautiful medieval church is in ruins. A large number of tourists come here to see these enchanting and mysterious ruins of the abbey.
The abbey was founded in 1121 by Henry I. The founder of the church was buried somewhere in the grounds around the abbey. Now the visitors can see the flint rubble masses on the grounds of this great abbey.
The surrounding area of the abbey is called Forbury Gardens. The church was 450 ft tall. There was also a tower at the centre of the church.
The Chapter House is the most well preserved part of the abbey. The church had beautiful stone facing on the walls. However, it has been completely stripped off over time. However, one can get an idea of the prosperity of this structure in Reading Museum.
