Winchester Cathedral is an important monument in Winchester city. This cathedral is one of the biggest cathedrals in the nation.
It’s nave is the longest as compared to any other Gothic church in Europe. Winchester Cathedral serves as the Bishop of Winchester's seat.
The original cathedral was built in 642. It was then known as Old Minster. The cathedral which is seen now was built next to this Old Minster. The new cathedral's construction started in 1079.
The cathedral is dotted with beautiful windows of stained glass. The famous statue of "Sound II" created by Antony Gormley is installed in the crypt of the cathedral. Winchester cathedral is the only place in the entire world which possesses a diatonic ring.
This ring holds fourteen church bells and a tenor. During winters, the surrounding area of the Winchester cathedral gets flooded with tourists. This is because of the Ice Rink arranged on the grounds outside the cathedral. This place is a combination of divinity, architectural beauty and serene nature.
