Burgh Island is a small, yet beautiful tidal island located in Plymouth. The island is located at only 200 meters away from the shore of mainland.
People move from the mainland to the island and vice versa on foot. However, vehicles can also pass through the route between the lands.
Walking or taking vehicles through the connecting route is possible only when the tide is low.
At times when the tide is high, a special vehicle called Sea tractor is used. This is a regular tractor like vehicle. Only the platform is raised higher from the wheels in order to travel through the high tide. The island was mentioned as St. Michael's island in historical documents.
The Burgh Island Hotel is the only residential spot on the island. Local people believe that a monastery was raised on this island, the remains of which are believed to be lying beneath the hotel. This is a unique isolated area which is at a short distance from the mainland.
