The Mendip hills on the north of Shepton Mallet are a famous tourist spot. There are several caves in the hills which were formed due to peculiar geology of this area. Large chunks of limestone on the hills were washed away by water thus caves are formed.
Tourists can enjoy various adventurous activities like cave diving in this area. The geological site of Thrupe Lane Swallet is listed under ‘Special Scientific Interest’. Here the swallet or sinkhole is 120 meters deep and 1,417 meters long. This is a special kind of cave formation, which is not seen anywhere else in the Mendip Hills.
There are some man made spectacles as well. The Market Cross located in the centre of the town, is 50 feet tall. It dates back to the 15th century and was restored in 1841. This once was an ominous place, where several members of the Monmouth Rebellion were killed in 1685.
