Stockport lies in the south east of the city of Manchester in Greater Manchester in the north west of England. According to the 2001 census the city has a population of 136,083 inhabitants, and an area of 48.7 sq miles, thus making it the twenty third most populated region in England.
The suburbs of the city include Stockport Metropolitan Borough, Cheadle, Marple, Reddish and Romiley, Marple and Cheadle Hulme. Initially, the city was a leading centre of the hat industry and was later also known for its cultivation of hemp and rope manufacturing.
Later, the city ventured into areas such as silk and cotton, in which it has done remarkably well. The city experiences a temperate maritime climate with relatively cool summers and mild winters. Snowfall is not common but can occur at times in certain areas.
