Museum of Cannock Chase

The Museum of Cannock Chase is located at the periphery of Hednesford Hills nature reserve. This edifice throws light on the history of Cannock Chase starting from medieval royal hunting forest up to coalfield community in the 19th century.

It is spread over an area of 30 acres of greenland and is just 3 miles away from Cannock Chase. It is connected with Cannock Chase by several footpaths. It is a perfect location to discover and explore the natural history of the region.

During the year, there are many ‘hands on’ history activities, special events and several exhibitions organized in this museum. For school children, there is an award winning and innovative educational program.

Adult tours are also organized which are led by costumed guides. During these tours, several aspects of the social and industrial history of the region are exposed.

Cannock Chase AONB

In 1958, as per the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949, the Cannock Chase AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) was created. It is spread over an area of 26 square miles and is the smallest mainland AONB in England.

The reason for designating this region as an AONB is that it was a beautiful landscape, wildlife and relevant history. In the past, it was a medieval Royal Hunting Forest. At present, one can view remnants of ancient oak woodland, attractive villages, farmland, historic parkland, birch and pine woodland and heathland.
