The population of the town is 5,089 and it is also the seat and major settlement of the Moyle District Council.
Ballycastle has a beach within its area and views across the Mull of Kintyre and the Rathlin Island of Scotland. The town is located at the northern mainland limit of the Glens Area of outstanding Natural beauty and the Antrim Coast.
The town hosts the well known Lammas Fair every year on the last Tuesday and Monday of August. The town houses the Corrymeela Community and also forms a part of the Antrim constituency.
