The town of Banbridge is a rapidly expanding town in the County Down in the Northern Ireland region. The town lies on the River Bann and on the A1 road.
The population of the region is 14,744 and was named after the first bridge constructed over the Upper Bann in the year 1712.
The main street of the city is unique and rises towards a steep hill. The town is generally used as an important stop on the Dublin to Belfast stagecoach route and the finest feature of the town is the underpass built in the year 1834 by William Dargan called colloquially The Cut. The official name of this bridge is 'Downshire Bridge'.
