Galashiels can be referred to as a burgh located within ‘Scottish Borders’, on the banks of ‘Gala Water’ river. This place is usually abbreviated as ‘Gala’.
Gala has obtained the reputation of being the main commercial center as well as ‘central communication point’ with respect to Scottish borders. This place is also reputable in terms of textile manufacturing. Moreover, it’s location of School of Textiles and Design, of Heriot-Watt University, a campus of Borders College, and Galashiels Academy.
Localites are generally addressed as ‘
Pail Merks’. This can be attributed to the fact that this town got plumbed in to mains ‘water system’ at last; thereby making residents rely on ‘buckets’ as ‘toilets’. It, however, needs to be noted that the ones who go on to represent Gala in ‘summer common ridings’ are called ‘Braw Lads and Lassies’.
There appears to be severe rivalry between the other ‘border towns’ and Gala; especially
Hawick; which is the 2nd biggest one in ‘Borders’.
