Lanark, whose Scottish name is spelt as "lanrik" is a town located in the central region of Scotland. Located in the lower Clyde valley, it is 24 km away from Glasgow and 34 km away from Edinburgh. Lanark's locating coordinates are 55.67º north and 3.78º west. Being the 100th largest settlement in Scotland it holds a population of around 8,253 according to the 2001 census.
Lanark's history leads us to 11th century when the king David I made it a Royal Burgh in 1140 A.D. it is also the birth place of William Wallace, the hero of the Scotland's republic tales who killed English sheriff, Haselrig, in 1297. The very first location of the Scotland parliament took place at the historic burgh of Lanark in the year 978. The town of new Lanark was founded in 1796 to carry out the mill industry. Lanark was once the County Town of the former county of Lanarkshire. Lanark has very low number of industries with many people going to Glasgow to work.
