Orkney Islands is an archipelago of over seventy islands in northern Scotland. It houses the sixth largest island in Scotland, the Mainland, and is known to contain some of the most ancient Neolithic sites in Europe. A population of approximately 22,000 inhabitants is housed here.
A temperate climate prevails in this region with bright summers and long winters. Rainfall is adequate with fog being a regular feature. September is the best month to visit for the fine weather and lively atmosphere.
The history of this region dates back to 5,000 years ago with the earliest known settlement being the Neolithic tribes. In recent years, the region developed with visible growth in agriculture, fishing, construction, oil and tourism. The area has also seen significant growth in the public sector.
