Surface: Scotland occupies the northern third of the island of Great Britain and has a total area of 78,772 sq km.

Population:  The population is around 5,116,900. The Scottish constitute a majority, with increasing minorities from Asia.

System of government: Scotland has a constitutional monarchy.

Capital: Edinburgh, with a population of 448,630, is the capital of Scotland.

Religion: The Church of Scotland is followed by most in Scotland. Others include Roman Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs.

Official Language: English, Scottish and Gaelic are the official languages.

Government: Scotland has a constitutional monarchy.

Climate: Scotland has a temperate and oceanic climate, although west Scotland is warmer than the east.

Units of measure and electricity: Scotland follows the English unit of measurement while the official electrical unit is 230 V, 50 Hz.

Time Zone: The standard tome zone of Scotland has no GMT offset.

Currency: Pound Sterling (1 € = 0.6832 GBP).

Travel documents required: Tourists are required to have a visa.
Economy

Scotland has an open mixed economy which is keenly linked with the economy of England. The economy was traditionally dominated by heavy industry. With de-industrialisation, the economy has become service oriented. Scotland’s primary exports include whisky, electronics and financial services.

Scotland may be found expensive by some but is at par with most western countries. Hostels and campsites cost around £7–15 a night, while a hotel can cost anything above £23.
