Cardiff is in South Wales overlooking the Atlantic. This year (2005), it celebrates
its centenary as a city and its 50th year as Wales' capital. Although very young,
Cardiff is rapidly becoming an important European capital with a cosmopolitan
feel and a dynamic atmosphere.
In recent years Cardiff Bay has changed dramatically, from its past as the
world's largest coal exporting port to Europe's largest waterfront sport and
leisure complex.
The bay has been turned into a vast freshwater lake with the construction of
a barrier. A number of boat tours operate from Mermaid Quay, to help tourists
learn about the history and fauna of this exciting area.
The city centre is impressive and varied in its architecture and is surrounded
by acres of parkland.
