The Stone Castle

The actual fortress is placed, within Hay-on-Wye it was once a huge site imposing the town and river under the present ruins of the castle and mansion. It was known as the 'castello de haia', it was given to 1st Earl of Hereford, Miles de Gloucester, in 1121.When he got married to the daughter of Bernard de Neufmarché. 

This is the oldest Norman tower in Wales. The keep is approximately thirty feet square and at a time had four storeys. Due to insecure foundations, the corners of the tower have been rebuilt.

Hay Festival

It is popularly known as the Hay Festival of Literature & Arts. It is a literature fiesta held annually, from May to June for a period of ten days. In 1988, Peter Florence invented the festival. The festival has prolonged in recent years and now also includes film previews and musical performances.

"Hay Fever", a children's fiesta, runs next to the actual celebration. It has also extended globally and sister event take place in Cartagena and Segovia.

Castle Book Store

It is the best among the large number of book outlets selling new and second hand books in Hay on Wye. The old cinema has been transformed and also has a vast range.

Many are a very rare find, and few are full of fiction. It is a place which booklovers will adore, as if you love browsing through old books there can surely be nowhere better, then spending your afternoon here.
